It’s official. The new Xbox will launch PC games
Project Helix, as this is its code name, will be a new console from the Xbox family, as confirmed by Asha Sharma, the new general director of Microsoft Gaming, the department responsible for the Xbox brand, who replaced Phil Spencer in this position on February 23 this year. So we have first-hand information.
Project Helix
As it emphasized in the announcement, this console is to be the performance leader in playing games on Xbox and PC. If this is true, this is going to be a really powerful machine that will leave the current generation far behind.
This also means that games will still be produced exclusively for the Xbox ecosystem, and the upcoming device should not be just a PC in a smart casing and with the Xbox logo on the casing. As we can read in the announcement:
A great start to the morning with the Xbox team, where we talked about our involvement in the return of Xbox, including Project Helix, the code name for our next-gen console. Project Helix will lead in gaming performance and support for Xbox and PC. I can’t wait to talk more about this with partners and studios at my first GDC next week!
However, some doubts may arise here. After all, why would third-party game developers want to create titles exclusively for Xbox if it would also run typical PC games? Of course, Microsoft-owned studios, and there are many of them, might have no choice but to create two versions of their games. But what would motivate others to treat the upcoming Xbox as something more than just a PC?
Well, it’s safe to assume that Xbox is aware of this and has a trick up its sleeve to solve this problem. Be it through financial incentives or monopolizing the distribution of games in the upcoming console. After all, support for Windows games and programs does not mean that we will install Steam or another game store on the new hardware.
