BeatBanker is a new malware that targets users of Android devices. How to protect yourself against it?
BeatBanker malware for Android
The malware is distributed in the form of APK files. Most often, it impersonates the Starlink application. Once installed, it checks carefully to make sure it is not analyzed by Android’s security mechanisms. If not, it launches the user to a fake screen that looks like the Play Store, asking them to update the app. In this way, it downloads additional code and obtains the permissions necessary to operate.
BeatBanker has a rather unusual way of keeping activity in the background. All the time, in a loop, it plays a multimedia file that is only 5 seconds long, almost inaudibly. This way it protects itself from being shut down and causing harm to the infected device.
What does malware do? First of all, it is used to steal our data, including passwords, logins and authentication codes. In this way, the attacker can gain access to our account and conduct unauthorized transactions. In addition, it can also mine the Monero cryptocurrency in the background, which additionally negatively affects the operation of the device, including battery life.
Although BeatBanker has so far been detected in Brazil, experts emphasize that if it proves successful, it could potentially be distributed around the world. Therefore, we warn you once again against installing applications from unknown sources. This is just asking for problems.
