More and more GitHub failures. A strong alternative is emerging

OpenAI is working on its own platform for storing and managing source code, which may become an alternative to GitHub in the future. The project was created in response to increasingly frequent problems with the popular Microsoft repository. Interruptions in the operation of the platform have hampered the work of many engineers in recent months.

The numbers don’t lie, GitHub has 58% more incidents

The new platform is only at an early stage of development. People who know the background of the project say that its completion may take many more months. The company also has an idea to make the service commercially available to OpenAI customers in the future, although ultimately it may remain a tool used only internally.

Over the past year, users have noticed a marked deterioration in GitHub’s stability, which coincides with an infrastructure overhaul. These are not mere guesses, because in October, CTO Vladimir Fedorov informed employees in an internal memo that the entire website would be moved to the Microsoft Azure cloud within two years.

Statistics also confirm the increase in the number of problems. The GitProtect report shows that in the first half of 2025, the number of incidents increased by 57.9% year-on-year. The number of reports increased from 69 to 109, of which 17 were classified as serious.

OpenAI is starting to compete more and more with Microsoft

If Sam Altman’s team decides to make its platform available as a commercial service, it could mean direct competition with Microsoft. The situation would be interesting because Microsoft owns approximately 27% of shares in OpenAI, and in 2018 it bought GitHub for $7.5 billion.

However, it is not impossible. OpenAI is increasingly boldly entering areas previously dominated by Microsoft products. According to previous reports, the company is developing ChatGPT features related to document collaboration and creating presentations that can compete with Office applications.

Creating your own code repository systems is not unusual in the world of technology giants. Google has been using its internal Piper system for years, and Meta is developing the Sapling platform. In both cases, however, these tools were never made publicly available.
