The record was broken. It’s about cash

The National Bank of Poland presented data on the cash currently in circulation. The record was broken.

Although we hear more and more often that cash is on the decline and the number of non-cash transactions is still growing, data from the National Bank of Poland seem to contradict this. The amount of cash in circulation is at a record high.

Cash record

The National Bank of Poland provided data on cash in circulation at the end of September 2024. The total value of coins and banknotes exceeded PLN 400 million for the first time in history. It amounts precisely to PLN 402.5 billion, whereas in the middle of the year it was still PLN 393.5 billion. In turn, in September a year ago, there was cash in circulation worth PLN 376.6 billion.

The most popular banknote in circulation is PLN 100, of which there are as many as 1.505 billion pieces. In second place is PLN 200 with a result of PLN 939 million, and in third place is PLN 10 (223 million). The rarest banknote is still the PLN 500 banknote introduced in 2017 (82.9 million pieces). When it comes to coins, the most numerous are 1- and 2-cent coins, and the least are 5-złoty coins.

In terms of value, banknotes account for as much as PLN 395.847 billion. Coins, in turn, account for PLN 6.6 billion of all cash in circulation.
