Sony PlayStation 6 with a major change? Gamers can breathe a sigh of relief

Last week Sony officially presented the consoles PlayStation 5 Pro. This is a current generation refresh that is expected to bring significant improvement in graphics performance – including more FPS and better ray tracing. Of course, the price has also increased, and consumer and press reviews are quite mixed.

This does not mean, however, that the Japanese are not working on a full-fledged successor, i.e. Sony PlayStation 6The process began several years ago and involved the largest industry giants.

As reported by Reuters, in 2022 Sony held talks with AMD and Intel on who will supply the chipset powering the PlayStation 6. The meetings lasted several months. and CEOs and engineers participated in them. More manufacturers were considered at the start (e.g. Broadcom), but the best offer was presented by the Reds and Blues.

Finally, this AMD won the negotiationsand there were two reasons for this. First, Intel and Sony could not agree on how much the Blues would earn on each sold chip. Second, The Japanese were keen to maintain the best possible backward compatibilityand AMD powered the previous generations.

Sony, AMD and Broadcom declined to comment on the matter. Intel was rather vague:

We strongly disagree with this description of the situation, but we do not intend to comment on any current or potential customer discussions. We have very good customers in both our products and semiconductor business, and we are focused on innovating to meet their needs.

There is still a long way to go before the launch of Sony PlayStation 6so there is currently little information available. Suffice it to say that 7 years passed between the launch of PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. If this happens again, PlayStation 6 won’t be released until 2027. However, the Japanese are already announcing that they will place a lot of emphasis on artificial intelligence/machine learning.
