Samsung showed off a sliding phone. The screen grows in the user’s hand
Samsung showed one of such concepts during the MWC 2026 trade fair in Barcelona. The new model is called Mobile Slidable. In its basic form, it is an ordinary smartphone with a 5.1-inch screen. The aspect ratio is 16:9. However, the housing frame can be moved upwards manually.
This movement brings out an additional part of the display. The screen unfolds from inside the phone and grows to 6.7 inches, and its aspect ratio changes to 22:9. The resolution is 1080 by 2640 pixels, and the dot density reaches 426 ppi. The phone can be rotated horizontally, giving you a wide panel to work with.
The equipment at Mobile World Congress is just a prototype. Samsung Display treats it as a research model, without providing a possible market premiere date. We have already seen a similar project in 2022 called Flex Slidable. That equipment expanded the screen in two directions after pressing a button. The device was never sold.
Samsung is also testing other formats. The Flex S and Flex G tablets were shown at MWC 2026. They have hinges in two places and their screen bends in three parts. The Flex S model bends into the shape of the letter S, while the Flex G closes inwards, just like the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold already on the market.
Samsung Display also showed stretchable matrices. Such a screen can deform by 25 percent. This allows you to create convex shapes on a flat display. All these projects are currently at the stage of work in laboratories.
