New ban on airplanes. It has already entered into force
Recently, more airlines have introduced restrictions on the use of power banks. Some prohibit them from being brought on board unless they meet certain conditions (e.g. maximum capacity). Still others allow it, but at the same time prohibit their use. This time, a European carrier decided to take such a step.
Ban on using power banks
This time Lufthansa informed about the change in regulations. From January 15, 2026, the German carrier allows you to take power banks with you on board, but you cannot use them. It’s about safety issues. The exception is medical devices that may require charging during the flight.
The company is also introducing restrictions on how the power bank can be transported. Under no circumstances can it be kept in checked baggage. The device must be in your hand luggage. However, it cannot be stored in the storage compartment above the seat. The equipment may be in the seatback pocket or under the seat in front of us. Additionally, it must be protected against damage.
The ban on use applies not only to charging a smartphone, headphones or laptop. You can’t charge the power bank itself either. In addition, it is possible to transport a maximum of two devices per person with a capacity of up to 100 Wh. Models with a capacity of 100 to 160 Wh require approval. Even larger ones are completely prohibited.
The new rules apply not only to Lufthansa aircraft, but also to all airlines that belong to its group, namely:
- Swiss International Air Lines,
- Austrian Airlines,
- Brussels Airlines,
- Eurowings,
- ITA Airways,
- Air Dolomiti,
- Edelweiss Air
