Do you have this e-book reader? This feature will change the way we read
Immersive Reading combines ebooks with audiobooks
Audible and Kindle introduce Immersive Reading mode, which simultaneously plays the audiobook and highlights the text in the ebook. This isn’t like the earlier Whispersync feature, which could remember and mark in an ebook where we left off, and then we could resume the same book as an audiobook from the same point in time (or vice versa). The whole “nice” is that now you can read an e-book and have an audiobook playing at the same time, and the Kindle screen will highlight the text that is currently being read in real time.
Of course, you may wonder whether this doesn’t sound like sensory overload and whether it makes sense at all? And this approach certainly won’t work for everyone, but potentially the assumption is that the narrative guides us through the text and the eyes have a point of attachment. It’s a bit like turbo-dopamine for concentration, where the sound keeps the rhythm and the eyesight does not let the thoughts wander. This can be especially useful for people who love reading but are easily distracted.
The greatest effect can be seen where audiobooks usually fail. When you listen in silence, with your hands free, your brain tends to drift away – and suddenly you realize that the narrator has been talking for five minutes and you don’t remember a word. Immersive Reading eliminates this problem. The illuminated text provides an anchor, and the combination of two stimuli makes it easier to maintain attention and actually remember the content. This is especially helpful with the so-called books. non-fiction, where every sentence counts, but also when reading in the evening, when the eyes start to stop cooperating.
The mode also works great as a reading booster. Just a few pages of narration are enough to get into the rhythm and continue on your own. And if we have to get up from the couch for any reason and, for example, do something in the kitchen, the narrative simply continues.
Unfortunately, this solution also has drawbacks, as it is limited to the Amazon ecosystem, i.e. the Amazon store, Kindle devices and the Audible audiobook platform. In addition, to use Immersive Reading you must purchase the e-book and audiobook separately (if these two formats exist for this particular book). Sometimes the latter form is available at a discount, but in practice it means an increased expense.
