Empik is launching a pilot program for payment for purchases using a method combining iris and facial biometrics. The supplier of this solution is the Polish fintech PayEye, and everything is done as part of the Mastercard Biometric Checkout program.

Already June 12 in five Empik stores a pilot payment program will be launched with a new cashless, connecting method iris and facial biometry. The solution provider is Polish fintech PayEyewhich has been developing this globally unique identity verification function when shopping for several years.

PayEye payments in Empik stores

The combination of iris biometrics and facial scanning is two-factor confirmation payments that are made with one look at the terminal, in one process. PayEye assures that these two components guarantee complete security and create a unique, unforgeable token for every user. The developed method also allows for payments in glasses or lenses.

In the pilot of biometric payments using the iris and face, planned by Empik initially for three monthsalso participates Mastercard and technological partner of the program – PlanetPay. This is also the first pilot of biometric payments in Europe under the Mastercard Biometric Checkout program.

Out of over 350 Empik stores throughout Poland, 5 locations were selected for the pilot: Warsaw Westfield Mokotów, Wrocław Bielany, Kraków Kazimierz, Poznań Posnania and Czeladź M1. If the new method proves successful, the program will be extended and expanded to new places.

Poles are ready for technological innovations

Empik is counting on the new payment method will be accepted among Poles. As the above data shows, we are very open to this type of technological innovations, and market research conducted by Minds & Roses for Mastercard shows that 4 out of 5 Poles uses or has used biometric security, most often on phones. Among people of age 18-25 years old already practically everyone had contact with biometrics.

Empik customers are also happy to do so take advantage of new amenitiessuch as the Pay&Go payment method, i.e. “scan and pay” without going to the cash register.

How do PayEye payments work?

The technology of cashless biometric payments in stores using the fusion of eye and facial biometrics is developed by the Polish fintech PayEye, which is also the supplier special eyepos terminal. These terminals also allow for use of other methods payments, so they are universal and can be installed at any point of sale.

Payment is very simple. Just download free PayEye application, create an account, take a selfie and connect your payment card. Thanks to this, customers do not need to go shopping taking out cash, phone or wallet. The payment will be made with one glance. When making your first purchase using this method, you still need to complete a one-time verification process. As PayEye assures, facial and iris scans are not collected and stored anywhereand a unique token is used to confirm identity.
