A TV for PLN 135? One Empik website is causing a stir on the Internet
Has Empik gone crazy? 65-inch TV for PLN 135
Who among us hasn’t experienced this? We browse through the pages and suddenly our attention is drawn to an attractive folder with electronic products. The store is known and reputable, but the prices are somewhat detached from reality.
Analysts from CERT Orange Polska informed about the latest threat. Their message actually gives food for thought and exposes how fraudsters operate.
The fake store impersonates the Empik domain. Instead of the original domain (empik.com), we are dealing here with a slightly more complicated combination of letters in the address of the empikpl(.)shop website. This is nothing more than a classic example of phishing and social engineering. The familiar name in the address can be misleading. Unfortunately, we often ignore suspicious endings, especially when we browse websites on our phones.
When should the warning light come on?
There are two obvious signals – too low prices of attractive products and a strange Empik domain address.
The familiar beginning of the address may make us ignore the suspicious ending. Even more so when we use a mobile device, where the address bar disappears after a while and only the familiar logo catches our eye.
We also see the BLIK option on the website, which is the most important tool for fraudsters. It is this link that directs the unaware customer to a fake PayPal subpage that extorts data. If we leave this data, criminals will make purchases up to the limits of our card.
Try to contact Empik
This is also a good way to check whether it is a real website. The fake website usually lacks company and contact details, the content is generic, and the name of the entity does not match the brand on the website.
