Poland powered by nuclear energy. Bełchatów next in line

Bełchatów is famous for two things: a great volleyball team and a coal power plant. This may change soon. The surroundings of the city in the province Łódź are recommended as the location of another nuclear power plant in Poland.

Clean electricity from Bełchatów

Today it sounds at least strange, but this may be the future of our country. PGE President Dariusz Marzec announced that the company recommends the Bełchatów area as a location for the next nuclear power plant after Lubiatów.

He speaks for it infrastructure already built. It’s not just about the electricity transmission network. There are roads, there is a railway, there is water necessary to cool the reactor. At the same time, residents are accustomed to these landscape elements.

It’s also a plus availability of employees with experience in the industry. The employees themselves also support this idea. Many trade unions appeal to Donald Tusk to continue the region’s energy traditions, of course without coal. Moreover, in this area there is the headquarters of PGE Górnictwo i Energetyka Nowoczesnonalna – the country’s largest producer of brown coal and the largest producer of electricity in Poland.

What about a coal-fired power plant?

Currently, 30 percent comes from Bełchatów. electricity consumed by Poles. A brown coal mine has also been active near Bełchatów for 50 years. Both objects will still work. Dariusz Marzec predicts that will be needed in the Polish energy network for several more years.

It is possible that elements of the coal block infrastructure will be used to build a nuclear power plant – this is another advantage of this place. There are no specific dates for the phasing out of the coal facility yet. This will certainly happen, regardless of where the second nuclear power plant is built.

Two nuclear plants with a total capacity of 6-9 GW are to be built in Poland.
