SK hynix wants to overtake Samsung

There are three main producers of this type of dice in the world – Korean ones SK hynix and Samsung and American Micron. It so happens that industry sources revealed the plans of the first of the mentioned companies.

SK hynix wants to produce 6th generation HBM4 with the use of TSMC 3nm class lithography. This is a big change, because it was originally planned to use the 5 nm process. These systems are to power AI accelerators from NVIDIA, which currently favors Samsung chips in 4 nm lithography.

Already in March, SK hynix showed the HBM4 prototype using vertically stacked layers on a 3 nm matrix. Compared to the die at 5nm it has to offer this efficiency increase by 20 to 30%. However, Korean general-purpose HBM4 and HBM4E chips will still use the 12nm process.

It is estimated that SK hynix currently has almost 50% share in the HBM marketand most of the production goes to NVIDIA. The question is how the situation will change after the recent decisions of the US government, which extended the sanctions imposed on China to also cover the most efficient VRAM memories. This also applies to the Americans’ partner countries.
