A team of researchers from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington he discovered that the pyramids were built along a long-lost, ancient branch of the Nilewhich is currently covered by desert and farmland.

Until now, archaeologists claimed that the ancient Egyptians had to use a nearby waterway to transport stone blocks needed to build the pyramids. However, until now, no one was sure what this waterway looked like or how far it was located.

Discovery through radar technology

To map a branch of the river that was filled in during a great drought, a group of researchers used satellite radar images, historical maps, geophysical research. It took a lot of effort and patience. The team though managed to “penetrate through the sand surface and obtain an image of hidden objects”. All this thanks to radar technology.

It turned out that the objects included “buried rivers and ancient structures”, located at the foot of the site of the pyramid complex.

The location of the actual branch of the river and having data showing that there was a waterway that could be used to transport heavy blocks, equipment and people, all really help us explain the construction of the pyramid.

Researchers found that a branch of the river, called the Ahramat branch (“ahramat” means pyramids in Arabic), was approximately 64 km long and 200 to 700 m wide. It bordered 31 pyramids.

Why is this discovery important?

The discovery of this extinct branch of the river would explain the density of pyramids between Giza and Liszt, in this currently unfriendly area of ​​the desert. As we know, each river plays a key role in the country and is often its last resort.
