The humanoid robot made the audience laugh. Not everything worked out for him
A humanoid robot can do more than just walk
During the recent CES 2026 technology trade show in Las Vegas, Boston Dynamics presented its advanced humanoid robot Atlas. They waited a long time to show off his skills to a wider audience – work on it lasted over a decade. It’s no wonder that some of his abilities are breathtaking.
Atlas strutted onto the stage with such a natural stride that many viewers had to wonder if the team behind the robot had somehow managed to fit a human inside it. We assure skeptics – Atlas is a 100 percent humanoid robot.
Bonus for robotics fans
But just walking isn’t enough for the Atlas team. Boston Dynamics has also prepared something typically entertaining for a small group of viewers. It was for them that the humanoid robot performed a backflip.
Here’s a video of the stunt, which shows a small group of spectators counting down the time as Atlas prepares to jump backwards. As you can see, the somersault itself was almost perfect, but the landing surprised many people. This wasn’t entirely expected.
Atlas managed to make a full turn in the air and land on his feet, but the landing clearly requires further refinement. Before the robot straightens itself, it wobbles funny and even stumbles. The keen eye will also notice that he loses the grapple guard in his right hand, returning to the ground with a slight pop.
Regaining balance, however, demonstrates advanced computational intelligence, and the multiple joints do a truly impressive job throughout this acrobatics.
