El Dorado is over. ChatGPT will become more expensive and there will be limits
OpenAI is clearly signaling that the current subscription model, including packages advertised as unlimited, is not ideal. Nick Turley from ChatGPT admitted that the pricing of AI services will have to change with the technology. In his opinion, the development of models is so fast that maintaining a simple subscription for a long time may turn out to be unprofitable.
Everyone will pay for consumption, as in the case of electricity
As a reminder, ChatGPT currently offers four subscriptions – free, Go for PLN 34.99, Plus for PLN 99.99 and Pro for PLN 999.99 per month. And it is the latter that is problematic because it offers, among other things, unlimited access to GPT-5.4 and file transfers; unlimited, faster image creation; expanded video generation access and maximum context.
The problem is that AI costs more and more. The more advanced the models, the greater the demand for computing power. So Turley compared the idea of an unlimited AI plan to an unlimited electricity bill. In other words, it sounds attractive, but in practice it makes little sense for the supplier.
Current plans for ChatGPT available in Poland.
OpenAI does not hide that the current subscription system was an accident. ChatGPT was initially intended to be just a short demonstration of its capabilities, but after huge interest, the company had to quickly find a way to organize access and reduce infrastructure overload. The subscription turned out to be the simplest solution then.
Now, however, the company is looking further. There is more and more talk about billing based on actual consumption, just like in the case of electricity or cloud services. This direction was recently suggested by Sam Altman, who believes that AI may in the future be sold more like a medium than a classic subscription service.
For users, this means one thing – the era of simple, unlimited ChatGPT may come to an end over time. Instead of a convenient subscription, we will probably get a more complex offer, in which the price will increasingly depend on the real use of artificial intelligence.
