Do you have headphones from these brands? They may be toxic. A shocking report
Headphones are no longer just a music accessory. They have become an element of our wardrobe, a remote work tool and a companion at the gym. We wear them for hours, often in direct contact with sweaty skinand. Just this aspect experts took a closer look from the ToxFree LIFE for All project, coordinated, among others, by the Czech organization Arnika. They tested 81 pairs of headphones available on Central European markets and on platforms such as Temu and Shein.
The audit results are a bucket of cold water for the technology industry. It turns out that the high price of the product is no guarantee of safety.
Headphones can cause cancer
The report reveals the systemic failure of manufacturers. In all tested models – without exception – substances were found that may disrupt human hormonal balance. This is what I’m talking about primarily about bisphenols (BPA and its substitutes), phthalates and chlorinated paraffins.
Why is this so important? These compounds are not permanently incorporated into the structure of the plastic. They are just additions that under the influence of heat and sweat – i.e. conditions typical for the use of headphones, especially during training – may transfer to the skin and penetrate the body. They won’t poison us immediately. The risk lies in the so-called the effect of a cocktail: chronic, long-term exposure to microdoses of toxins, which medicine associates with the growing wave of cancers, fertility problems and developmental disorders in children.
Giants on the censored list: Samsung, Sony, Bose and Sennheiser
The most interesting element of the report is a detailed analysis of specific models that we know well from store shelves. The devices that performed the worst in the tests included headphones that are considered market quality standards. Serious reservations were raised by researchers, among others: Samsung Galaxy Buds3 Pro Whether Sony WF-1000XM5 and circumaural Sennheiser Momentum 4 and Bose QuietComfort. In the case of these models, the analyzes showed the presence of harmful substances in concentrations that are disturbing in the light of the report, especially in elements that come into direct contact with the user’s body or in internal structural components.
On the other hand, the study indicated that Apple AirPods Pro 2 and Sony WH-1000XM5 These are examples of devices in which manufacturers ensured a much cleaner chemical composition of materials. These models were assessed positively, which proves that producing safe electronics is technologically possible and feasible – it is only a matter of the manufacturer’s decision and supply chain control.
Headphones are an interesting case Beats Solo 4. Although the elements that directly touch the skin (ear cups) turned out to be free of toxins, the entire structure of the device was rated negatively due to the presence of dangerous compounds in the remaining parts of the housing. This shows how complicated this problem is – even if the manufacturer ensures safe earmuffs, toxins may be hidden in the headband or transducer housing.
The report dispels the myth that branded means safe. Although the cheapest headphones from Chinese shopping platforms often include shocking concentrations of phthalates (the record holder from Temu had nearly 5,000 mg/kg with the standards calculated in permille), the presence of toxic bisphenols in equipment costing PLN 1,500 is difficult to accept.
Experts from ToxFree LIFE for All emphasize that the problem will not be solved by individual purchasing decisions, because the market is saturated with toxic substances. They are necessary changes at the level of the European Union – above all, a shift from slowly banning individual substances to blocking entire groups of chemicals with similar effects.
