A text message and then a phone call. If you believe, you will be left with debt
First a fake text message, then a phone call
It all started with a text message received by the 37-year-old. The sender was the Credit Information Bureau, so he saw no reason to ignore the message. The SMS informed that BIK had accepted his loan application for nearly PLN 50,000. zlotys. This amount was to be paid in full to the account of a woman he did not know. The man didn’t really understand what it was all about, but right after he received the message, his phone rang. The caller introduced himself as a bank employee and also informed the 37-year-old that someone had just taken out a loan using his details.
The man was made aware that in order to avoid financial consequences, he must strictly follow all the instructions of the bank employee.
The fake interlocutor “sold” the 37-year-old a story about a dishonest employee working in one of the bank branches who should be exposed. In connection with the planned activities, the man received clear instructions – he was to go to the indicated bank and take out a loan for PLN 110,000. zlotys. The credit decision was to confirm whether the 37-year-old’s data had been used by fraudsters.
After obtaining the loan, the man was to deposit some of the money into a bitomat (cryptocurrency ATM). Following the guidelines, the 37-year-old bought cryptocurrencies for over PLN 80,000. PLN and deposited it into a virtual wallet.
When the criminal asked for another financial obligation, the man became suspicious. After checking the BIK report, it turned out that yes, he had a loan to repay, but only the one worth PLN 110,000. zlotys he had just borrowed.
How could this have been avoided?
In such cases, only caution can save us. Bank employees never ask you to take out loans, withdraw money or use ATMs. Police officers do not conduct any “secret actions” and do not order financial operations. If we are encouraged to do this type of activity, it is best to stop the conversation and contact the bank or the police directly.
