OpenAI is preparing for the long-announced introduction “adult mode” In ChatGPT. The new feature will allow users to conducting erotic conversationsbut in a limited form. According to the latest information, at the beginning we are only talking about text chats, without support for generating images, video or voice.

The first announcements of this mode have appeared in October last year. That’s when Sam Altman suggested that the team had managed to reduce the risks associated with AI’s negative impact on users’ mental health enough to consider implementation NSFW content for verified people. Initially, the premiere was planned for Q4 2025, but recently it was announced that the work was postponed, explaining it by the need to focus on other things. Unfortunately, the new implementation date has not been announced.

However, the delays are caused not only by organizational issues, but also by… serious ethical challenges. According to reports, an internal advisory board warned the company back in January that adult mode can be abused. Among the concerns were scenarios in which a chatbot could strengthen unhealthy emotional attachments or reach minors.

The key problem remains content moderation. OpenAI must find a balance between loosening the rules and at the same time blocking the most dangerous scenarios, such as sexual violence or content related to the exploitation of minors. This is much more difficult than in the case of standard conversations, because the line between acceptable eroticism and harmful material is extremely thin.

The age verification system turned out to be an additional challenge. At some point, the OpenAI algorithm misclassified people in approximately 12% of cases. With the scale of the platform used by up to 100 million users under the age of 18 every week, this would mean potentially millions of young people accessing sexual content.

However, choosing text instead of multimedia may prove strategic. In many countries, laws require strict age verification for pornographic content in the form of images or videos, but they do not cover text-based erotica to the same extent. This allows OpenAI to more easily navigate within the applicable regulations.
