Scam “just in case” – the course of the fraud

According to information from the Provincial Police Headquarters in Krakow, a 78-year-old resident of Krakow received a phone call from a woman who pretended to be her daughter. The caller stated that she had caused a fatal accident and needed money to pay bail. Only this will allow her to avoid immediate arrest. The woman was crying and there was static on the line, so it was difficult to realize that it was actually a stranger calling the senior woman and not her own daughter. To add seriousness to the whole matter, a man who pretended to be a prosecutor participated in the conversation. Most of the time, he actually spoke for his daughter and explained all the procedures to the 78-year-old. The senior woman was manipulated in such a way that she gave PLN 35,000 to a man who collected the envelope from her in person.

The suspect was quickly located

Fortunately, police officers from the criminal department were very vigilant. Not only did they manage to locate the suspect, but also, thanks to the collected evidence, keep him in custody. The fraudster turned out to be a 48-year-old resident of Krakow. The suspect faces up to 8 years in prison.

Let’s verify who we talk to on the phone

The police appeal for caution. Reminds you to always verify a caller, especially if they are asking for money. Let’s disconnect and reconnect with the person. Let us also remember that prosecutors or people representing institutions never ask for cash in an envelope. In the case of this type of phone call, it is best to call the emergency number 112 and report the matter.
