AMD is leaving customers out in the cold. Take care of yourself

AMD has apparently finished releasing dedicated graphics drivers for the Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor. This means no further optimization fixes for portable consoles, such as ASUS ROG Ally or Lenovo Legion Go.

The information came to light after Lenovo’s support responded to a user of the Legion Go device. He asked about further updates for the console. The manufacturer confirmed that AMD “has stopped supporting the Z1 Extreme with drivers.”

Ryzen Z1 Extreme, introduced in 2023 as a “high-end” for gaming handhelds, was based on drivers provided only by OEMs (Asus, Lenovo), and not generic ones from AMD Adrenalin, which had already caused frustration among gamers. ROG Ally and Legion Go users have long been manually installing drivers for the related 7840U, but the lack of official support means no more optimization for specific TDPs, power profiles and handheld configurations.

The community on Reddit and AMD forums is furious, and it’s no wonder. Many believe that after only 2.5 years since its release, it is a “premature death” for a chip that can still handle newer games after proper tuning. Players complain that they will be stuck with older versions of drivers with bug fixes, and the lack of new ones may mean compatibility problems in upcoming titles and Windows Update.

AMD has not issued an official statement. Apparently AMD has deemed the APU “mature” and is focusing on newer generations like Strix Halo.
