He was supposed to destroy the hard drive using a drill, but it failed

One Reddit user, signed as Stretcheddd, boasted about a story from his company. Well, an employee of the IT department, during a routine hardware replacement, drilled an SSD drive with a drill in order to physically destroy the data stored on it. The company he works for has a habit of giving away old computers, either to employees or to people in need. For unknown reasons, a drilled disk was also included in such a unit.

The disc outsmarted the drill

It so happened that this unit passed through the hands of Stretcheddd, who discovered that the drilled SSD inside was completely functional and only had a ventilation hole. While in the case of HDD the entire space of the 2.5-inch disk was filled with electronics, the mechanism or the magnetic disk itself, in SSD the norm is that most of the housing is empty.

However, the IT department employee, instead of drilling in the most obvious place, i.e. about a centimeter from the connector, made a hole more or less in the middle of the housing. Additionally, he did not check whether he hit the PCB. Thus, a functional disk was donated, which contained important company data. Fortunately, according to Stretcheddd, after he took possession of it and took photos, he sent it for disposal.

However, this rather funny story shows that falling into a routine when performing such important activities as destroying sensitive data can lead to a real tragedy. This time nothing happened. However, data from the media could fall into the wrong hands.
