She cheated at the self-checkout. She came up with a way to shop cheaper
The woman cheated at the self-service checkout
A 34-year-old resident of Ostrowiec County is suspected of committing seven frauds in one of the local supermarkets. The woman faces up to 8 years in prison, because what she committed is nothing more than a new type of theft.
She underestimated the value of purchases on the receipt
The buyer came up with an idea to lower the value of her purchases on the receipt. For this purpose, she put various types of groceries at the self-service checkout. Then, she scanned barcodes from cheaper products and actually made higher-value purchases.
The case was handled by police officers from the Department for Combating Crime Against Property and Juvenile Crime. The information provided to them allowed them to determine that the 34-year-old woman had visited the same store seven times last year and each time her purchases were identical. She put various types of food into her basket and then went to the self-checkout. There, she scanned codes from cheaper products and actually purchased higher-value groceries. In this way, the buyer defrauded the store for over PLN 1,250.
Let us remind you that under Polish law, this type of action is treated as fraud and the value of losses does not matter when qualifying this act. It will always be a crime punishable by 6 months to 8 years’ imprisonment.
