AMD ma nowe procesory dla profesjonalistów - przodują w liczbie TOPS, ale to dopiero początek

AI from the server to the computer, i.e. AMD is competing against TOPS

TOPS is another parameter on which modern computers will compete. Although this one is simple in perception – at least it may seem so.

TOPS – i.e. performance in locally processed artificial intelligence

Qualcomm provided 45 TOPS in its Snapdragon X, Intel provides 48 TOPS in Core Ultra Mobile. AMD – as you can easily guess – had to give more. June Ryzen AI 300 intended for the consumer market offered 50 TOPS (regardless of the variant), now it’s time for the series Ryzen AI 300 Pro and… it’s roughly the same as consumer processors (when it comes to TOPS), but with a business warranty package and an even tighter 9 HX Pro 375.

This is the second generation of AI processors for professionals from AMD

As far as variants 360 and 370 have NPU (part of the processor responsible for machine learning) offering 50 TOPS for 8-bit processing, as much already mentioned AMD Ryzen 9 HX Pro 375 achieved 55 TOPS.

This is the most among CPUs dedicated to innovations revolving around Microsoft’s Copilot+, and at the same time much less than dedicated Nvidia graphics cards can achieve. However, let’s not mix CPU and GPU.

Is it worth paying extra for more TOPS?

At this stage of development of local generative computing – not really. In a sense the difference between 45 and 55 TOPS will not change our lives. However, advanced users will likely notice minor differences in the selected operations. It should also be remembered that although Microsoft makes it clear that to fully experience Copilot+ it needs at least 40 TOPS, there are numerous third-party software vendors that could benefit from more processing power.

How many TOPS do professional processors have?

During the AMD presentation, of course, there were comparisons to selected competitive products. Consumer processors from Intel or Qualcomm were neatly omitted to show greater differences from Core Ultra (11 TOPS). Apple couldn’t do without a blow to the nose, because its M4 has only 38 TOPS and Copilot+ will not work.

When will computers with Ryzen AI 300 Pro be available?

The first laptops will be available for purchase before this year’s holidaysand next year they will be complemented by stationary solutions. In the second wave of laptops for 2025 There will also be models with a 5G modem (AMD did not want to name the modem provider at this stage).

In terms of the possibility of connecting external screens, the bottleneck of recent Copilot computers or MacBooks has appeared declaration of support for 3 or even 4 displays. Stationary solutions should have plenty of free ports for this purpose, while business laptops will require docking stations.

Much more has changed compared to the AMD Ryzen Pro 8040 than just the NPU cores

You have to hand it to AMD that they haven’t been idle, they now have new systems for professionals up to 12 CPU cores and up to 24 threadsclocked up to 5.1 GHz, up to 32 MB Cache, 16-core graphics on the RDNA 3.5 architecture (Radeon 880M and 890M), and TDP remained in the range of 15-54 W. The technological process is still 4 nm (TSMC), but you can already feel the upcoming 3 nm, announced for servers, in the air.

New Ryzen Pro version - specifications

And this battery

Perhaps the most important thing from a utility point of view is energy management in the new Ryzen Pro. It looked spectacular on the slides and we can’t wait for the first tests.

Without specifying the full specification, AMD promised 23 hours of continuous video viewing on a computer with AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX Pro 375. Plus up to 9 hours of continuous video calling via Microsoft Teams. And all this, let us remind you, in a computer whose multi-core processing performance is 1.4x higher than Intel Core Ultra 7 165H vPro (data from Cinebench 2024 nT).
