Will TikTok Disappear from the US? Decision Coming Soon
TikTok is facing a landmark decision from a US court. A hearing scheduled for next Monday could result in a verdict that could see the popular social media app completely removed from the United States.
Is the end of TikTok near?
TikTok has as many as 170 million users in the US. Even presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump post their videos on this popular app.
Out of concerns about cybersecurity and the risk of espionage, current US President Joe Biden recently signed a law aimed at restricting Chinese-owned apps. Such is the case with TikTok, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance.
The owner of TikTok was given several months to withdraw from the American market or sell the application to another entity, which would not arouse similar political suspicions.
ByteDance of course appealed the decision to the court, claiming that spying “is not technically, commercially, or legally possible.” The legal changes themselves were called “a departure from American values of free speech and an open Internet.”
