Powerful explosion in Russia. Code red declared

Russia’s Kamchatka is once again in turmoil. Recent earthquakes may have triggered an eruption of one of the most active volcanoes of recent times. Unfortunately, more powerful shocks may be on the way.

As reported by ABC News, Shiveluchone of Russia’s most active volcanoes, has erupted, sending plumes of ash 5 kilometres into the sky over far eastern Kamchatka. The incident was so serious that a red alert was in effect for aircraft in the surrounding airspace for some time. But this could be just the beginning of a series of explosions.

Prelude?

ABC News, citing volcanologists from the Russian Academy of Sciences, indicates that The Shiveluch volcano began spewing lava and smoke shortly after a powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck the eastern coast of Kamchatka early Sunday. But an even stronger blow could be on the way. What’s more, Shiveluch is not the only Russian volcano to erupt. The Ebeko volcano in the Kuril Islands also spewed ash up to 2.5 kilometres high. According to Russian researchers, another quake could hit within 24 hours, with a magnitude of up to 9.0.

As the Tass news agency points out, No commercial flights were disrupted. No damage to aviation infrastructure was reported. There were also no reports of injuries to the public from Sunday’s earthquake. Its epicenter was 108 kilometers (67 miles) from the nearest city.

According to Russian rescue services, There were no immediate reports of injuries from Sunday’s earthquake, which struck at a depth of 6 kilometres (3.7 miles) below the seabed, with an epicenter 108 kilometres (67 miles) southeast of the nearest city.
