Radio and television license fees have been keeping politicians and public media representatives awake at night for many years. Mainly because it is a tool with extremely low effectiveness. Audiovisual fee – is it really cheaper?

For many months, there has been information about replacing the radio and television license fee with a new audiovisual fee. It probably won't happen this year. Maybe next year, but the chances for this seem slim, as the National Broadcasting Council recently announced that RTV license rates for 2025 will remain unchanged. Moreover, the government was supposed to work on the audiovisual fee in April, but this did not happen and the issue went quiet.

What is the audiovisual fee supposed to be? There are several changes to the radio and television license fee. The most important is that the new tax would be collected together with the PIT, so it would be impossible to avoid it. It will be paid by everyone who is obliged to do so, so we will all contribute to public media.

The second change concerns the amount. This, according to plans (which may change), will amount to PLN 108 per year. The thing is that it would be collected from every household member aged 26 to 75. Therefore, in the case of large families with elderly people or adult children, the total payments may be higher than the RTV subscription, for which we pay PLN 327.60 per year (with monthly payments, because when paying a year in advance it is PLN 10). percent discount).

It may be reassuring that work on the audiovisual fee has not yet started. Moreover, the final shape may be different than in the design. Meanwhile, each quarter, Tax Offices collect overdue amounts and penalties for radio and television license fees amounting to several million PLN. In the first quarter of 2024, it was as much as PLN 5,951 million.
