Will mObywatel disappear? The ministry explains its mistake
A few days ago I wrote about the fact that the mObywatel application is inconsistent with the technical requirements of the EU eIDAS 2.0 regulation. Therefore, it cannot serve as a gateway to the European Digital Identity Wallet.
The Ministry of Digitization, in the justification for the draft act, itself wrote about the need to write the application from scratch and periodically maintain two solutions at the same time, which suggested that after some time mObywatel would be closed. Now the deputy head of the ministry, in an interview with the Zero.pl portal, admits that the terms were imprecise.
mObywatel will not disappear
Ultimately, there will be no need to maintain two public applications providing similar functions at the same time – not only because of the costs of maintaining them, but also because users may feel confused and not sure what to choose.
Now Dariusz Standerski, Deputy Minister of Digitization, admitted that it was not a very precise definition. He also added that the ministry does not intend to remove anything. The mObywatel application will continue to operate and will be the gateway to public services in Poland. At the same time, a second application will be created that will be compatible with eIDAS 2.0 and will allow the introduction of the European Digital Identity Wallet.
So why this statement in the justification? The problem is that both applications – mObywatel and the new one, compatible with eIDAS 2.0 – will not provide similar functions at all.
I don’t deny that it may have been imprecise. We will work to make such messages clearer and more precise
So mObywatel won’t go anywhere. The application will still work. At the same time, we will get a second one that will give us access to European documents that we will be able to use throughout the EU.
