Traffic lights may get a new color

The fourth color of traffic lights is to improve the movement of autonomous vehicles. In addition to red, green and orange lights, an additional one would appear.

We all know the colors of traffic lights very well. It turns out that according to scientists and in connection with the development of autonomous driving technology for driverless vehicles, additional light may soon appear on the roads.

Scientists from the University of North Carolina have proposed the introduction new white lightintended mainly for autonomous vehicles.

A red light would still mean stop, and a green light would mean go. A white light would tell drivers to simply follow the vehicle in front of them.

According to the researchers’ plan, driverless electric cars could communicate wirelessly with each other and with traffic light management systems. In this way, the number of vehicles in a given location at a given time could affect the type and frequency of lights displayed.

New light, less traffic jams

The calculations of American scientists say up to 25% reduction in traffic jams using this method. For this to happen, most of the cars on our roads would have to be driven in an autonomous driving system, which is hard to imagine at the moment.
