The HBO series with Elisabeth Olsen was based on the true story of an affair and a brutal crime that took place in Texas in 1980. The production is based on a book by John Bloom and Jim Atkinson and on famous articles from the local press. This is not the first film adaptation of this story – in 2022, the series “Candy: Death in Texas” was created, starring Jessica Biel, which received positive reviews. So, at first glance, it has everything to keep the viewer glued to the screen and at the same time quickly conquer the top 10 list.

In many cases, crime series based on facts become instant hits and land at number one in the rankings. The production is also helped by the fact that it was created by one of the most important American screenwriters – David E. Kelley. Those who haven’t heard about the series yet are lucky – they will find it on Netflix. Those who have already seen it (the premiere took place in 2023) have the opportunity to admire it again.

The action of the series takes the viewer to the surface a quiet suburb of Dallas where two families lead an idyllic life. The year is 1978. Candy and Pat Montgomery and Betty and Allan Gore are part of the local community, they are friends with each other, they eagerly attend church and choir practice, and they give the impression that their lives are perfect. The situation changes when Candy (Elisabeth Olsen) and Allan (Jesse Plemons) start an affairwhich over time will lead to tragedy. Slowly, each of them’s lives are getting out of control – and the viewer has to solve a murder case, and not just any murder, because the victim was attacked with an ax and died as a result of 41 blows.

The series is a perfect example true crime productionwith psychological elements. He stayed based on the true story of Candy Montgomery, who was accused of murdering her friend Betty Gore. The whole of America was alive with this famous trial. Ultimately, the woman was acquitted by the jury because she claimed she had acted in self-defense. This verdict also caused a huge stir.
