Fractal is one of those companies that needs no introduction to PC enthusiasts. The Swedes have been present on the computer components market since 2007 and have won the recognition of consumers thanks to solid and original equipment in Scandinavian style. Their first products were extremely quiet cases, but now they offer much more – fans, water cooling, armchairs, headsets and power supplies. And today we will focus on the latter.

The Swedes are confident and offer a 10-year warranty

Contrary to appearances, Fractal has quite extensive experience on the PSU market. The first units were the Tesla series around 2010, later Integra, Newton and Edison and their variations appeared. However, the period around 2019 is particularly noteworthy, because it was then that a real qualitative leap took place – the Ion+ series debuted. And today we are taking a look at the Fractal Ion 3 Gold family from the end of last year.

Fractal Ion 3 Gold are fully modular power supplies, available in versions with a power of 750, 850 and 1000 W. The latest standards such as ATX 3.1 or PCIe 5.1 are used here, which allows you to drive even the most efficient and demanding processors and graphics cards from AMD, Intel or NVIDIA. High efficiency is confirmed by the 80 PLUS Gold certificate.

Construction and quality of workmanship

Fractal Ion 3 Gold was packed in a large, white box additionally secured with a cardboard cover. The packaging is minimalistic – it only has the company logo, model name and colorful photos on the sides. Inside you will find two smaller boxes and two embossments holding the power supply in the middle. The PSU wrapped in foil (in my opinion, an unnecessary element) is also placed in a fabric bag. The whole thing gives the impression of dealing with a premium product.

It is worth appreciating that all the wiring is also white. Internal cables are a flexible tape solution (more on their number and type later). In addition, we are talking about standard paperwork – instructions for use and information on what to do if you receive a defective item. This is complemented by mounting screws, cable ties and a simple tester.

The power supply is as neat as its packaging. The housing is made of thick powder-coated sheet metal. The whole thing is white, the manufacturer’s name and logo are discreetly embossed on the side. There are no unnecessary decorations or black accents here. The fan grill is silver and the sticker with the parameters is hidden on the back. The only thing that catches the eye is the small 80 PLUS Gold marking.

Technical parameters and certification

Fractal Ion 3 Gold is a fully modular power supply compliant with the ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1 standards. In the case of our device, we are dealing with a unit with a power of up to 1000 W, which is a high ceiling for gaming computers. This is suitable for flagship processors and graphics cards, even after OC and under full load. Of course, there are also weaker versions to choose from.

The platform used is not an original project of the Swedes – it is a solution of the market leader, Seasonic. We are dealing here with a slightly modified design known from the Focus GX ATX 3.1 series. This is a modern, proven and valued solution based on a single +12V line. We get a half-bridge LLC + SR + DC-DC topology, Japanese Rubycon 105°C capacitors and a number of protections.

Installation and use

Installing Fractal Ion 3 Gold is simple and quick. The power supply is compatible with the ATX format and compact (150 mm long), so it will fit all Mid and Full Tower cases. The arrangement of the cables is pleasant because the bundles are very flexible. A minor downside is that the 12V-2×6 plug is not an angled solution.

The number and type of wires will depend on the power. Our version offers:

  • 1x ATX 24-pin (600 mm),
  • 2x ATX 12V (4+4-pin, 700 mm),
  • 3x PCIe (6+2-pin, 650 mm),
  • 1x 12V-2×6 (16-pin, 700 mm),
  • 1x Molex (650+150 mm),
  • 2x SATA (400+150+150+150 and 650+160 mm).

Performance tests

Fractal used its own Momentum 140 fan. It is a 140-mm unit with seven profiled blades and an FDB bearing, with a maximum speed of 2000 RPM. A switch on the back allows you to turn on the Zero RPM mode, where up to 30% of the load is cooled passively. However, even without it, it is a very quiet power supply. Up to about 500 W we are talking about less than 30 dB(A), and under maximum load we recorded 35.1 dB(A). Any GPU or CPU cooler will be noisier.

In terms of voltage regulation, it looks exemplary and everything is within the norm (with a large margin). On the most important rail, i.e. +12 V, it is ~24 mV at maximum load. The efficiency is also very good – 88.4% at 10% load, 91.3% at 50% and 87.8% at 100%. The 80 PLUS Gold certificate is the guarantee here.

Summary

Before I received Fractal Ion 3 Gold, I was a bit skeptical about it – theoretically, there are already a lot of power supplies of this class on the market. However, I was wrong, it is one of the best representatives of this segment. Changing the current partner (High Power) to Seasonic definitely paid off. We get solid and refined equipment that will easily support AMD Ryzen 9000, Intel Core Ultra 200 processors or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5000 and newer graphics cards.

The interior is in a class of its own, and it’s hard to fault the modern Focus GX ATX 3.1 platform. OptiSink technology does its job, soldering is at the highest level and there is no excess flux. The cooling system is quiet and efficient. Of course, everything will depend on the specific PC, but in our case the PSU case did not exceed 50°C.

Is this the perfect equipment? Basically yes. All “disadvantages” are minimal – the use of hexagonal screws instead of classic cross-head screws and a straight, not angular 12V-2×6 plug. However, Swedes should definitely invest in the Cybenetics certificate. These tests are more accurate and better suited to 2026 than 80 PLUS.

The price is also a positive surprise. The Fractal Ion 3 Gold 1000 W (White) we tested currently costs approximately PLN 659 in Poland. This makes it one of the more affordable options. Below there are only less reputable companies with typically Chinese components. And here the manufacturer is confident because he gives us a 10-year warranty.
