Samsung is making a breakthrough in TV. This technology changes a lot

Fighting for more layers

LG Display announced the introduction of the technology WOLED tandemi.e. a layered OLED structure in which red, green and blue emission elements are arranged in separate, laminated layersand completes the whole white sub-pixel (W) characteristic of LG panels. This multi-layer structure ensures higher brightness, lower energy consumption and greater durability of OLED materialsbecause the light load is distributed over several layers. In fact, this technology was developed earlier, and it’s more about the marketing message that this technology is now called Tandem WOLED, instead of the current OLED EX.

Samsung’s five-layer answer

There’s more to the new name than just marketing – there’s a story behind it five-layer structure of blue OLEDswhich replaces the earlier four-layer system used in QD-OLED. According to Samsung, this design allows you to achieve higher brightness, better energy efficiency and twice as long panel life. The company emphasizes that this is the result of several years of experience with mass production of QD-OLED and optimization of organic materials.

The new designation now covers several monitorsincluding last year’s 27-inch 4K panel and this year’s 32-inch 4K and 34-inch WQHD models. Samsung also confirmed the upcoming one 49-inch panel 5120×1440also based on a five-layer structure.

In the case of TVs, the QD-OLED Penta Tandem label will go to panels from 2025 and 2026 — all available sizes (55, 65 and 77 inches) already use the new architecture. Samsung announces that this year it will expand this technology to the entire line of premium panelssupplying them to the largest electronics manufacturers.

According to the company’s declaration, QD-OLED Penta Tandem panels can achieve up to 1300 nits in monitors and even 4500 nits in TVs (3% window), which is to be possible thanks to a more advanced, multi-layer organic structure. This is what is supposed to provide not only higher brightness, but also much longer service life — a key parameter in OLED panels.
