Google challenges Spotify. YouTube Music with a feature that was missing

The new function is now available to users who pay a Premium subscription on Android and iOS. The mechanism of operation is simple: just go to the Library tab, select the option to create a new playlist, and then use “AI Playlist”. The application will ask us to describe the mood, genre or even specific atmosphere we want to achieve, and Gemini’s algorithms will generate a ready-made set of songs. So we can ask for “energetic songs for running in the rain” or “quiet jazz for studying at night”, and the system will take care of the rest.

It’s hard to resist the impression that this premiere is not accidental in terms of timing. Last month, Spotify introduced an almost identical solution in the first countries called Prompted Playlists, which also allows users to play AI DJ. Google clearly does not intend to give up the field and wants to show that its algorithms can interpret users’ whims just as effectively.

Google does not yet reveal technical details regarding the limit of songs on such a generated list or the possibility of editing it after creation, which is possible in the case of Spotify’s competing solution.

It’s worth noting that YouTube Music has experimented with similar solutions before, offering the Ask Music feature (also known as AI radio). However, the novelty is different in that it creates a permanent playlist that appears in our library, and is not just a one-off radio station.

Early user reactions to Google’s news are mixed. The comments under YouTube’s announcement on the X platform show fatigue with the ubiquitous artificial intelligence. Many Internet users suggest that instead of new generators, they would prefer improvements to the basic functions of the player, which they have been waiting for for years.
