Shocking Sci-Fi Movie Coming to Netflix. Will It Be Another Hit?
“Ugly Guys” is certainly not pretty. The new Netflix film has arrived on the platform 20 years after the bestselling book premiered. And surprisingly, it’s much more relevant now.
Ugly is nothing more than an adaptation of Scott Westerfeld’s cult book. And as is often the case with adaptations of bestsellers, you can expect a blockbuster. The film premiered on Netflix last weekend and is already climbing the rankings of the most watched films. In this case, however, critics do not share the opinion of viewers, but their low ratings are not surprising at all. You may not like this film.
A dystopia where beauty is the most important thing
Plot Ugly is based on a rather original idea. In the world in which the film takes place, everyone who turns 16 is subjected to compulsory plastic surgery. All in order to get rid of the “ugly” self and become “pretty”. Everyone can look however they want. Society believes that this way it is possible to eliminate conflicts and the world becomes a better place. However, it turns out that reality is a bit more complicated. And so, the main character, Tally Youngblood, unexpectedly finds herself in the middle of a nascent rebellion.
Interestingly, the film waited almost 20 years for its premiere. The book, written in 2005, turned out to be very relevant right now, when we live in a world of ideals modified by Instagram filters. The film aims to draw attention to inner beauty and self-acceptance. Thus, it is aimed more at teenagers. It is a commentary on our obsession with beauty and social norms – something that is very relevant in the age of AI and social media.
The science fiction adventure was directed by McG, who is known for films such as Charlie’s Angels and Terminator: Salvation. The author of the novel served as an executive producer, ensuring fidelity to the book.
