Phones that should not be answered. They lost a total of PLN 338 thousand

The forbidden word in a phone conversation. Trust me, you don’t want to hear it

Telephone scams continue to multiply and sometimes sound very credible. Two people from Bydgoszcz lost a total of PLN 338,000. Could this have been avoided?

Despite the fact that there is a lot written about various attempted frauds, they continue to reap a heavy harvest. This time, they have tricked two residents of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. The victims lost huge sums of money because they believed that they were contacting a bank employee and an investment analyst. The police once again appeal for prudence and the application of the principle of limited trust, especially when it comes to money and offers of large profits over the phone.

A 70-year-old woman lost 138 thousand zlotys

The resident of Bydgoszcz will remember the last month of vacation with great bitterness. The woman found an advertisement on a social networking site about the possibility of buying Orlen shares and decided to call the attached number. No one picked up, but after a while she was contacted by a woman who gave her a supposed client number and forwarded the case to an analyst and a bank employee. Other people were supposed to guide her through the entire investment process. The analyst asked to install an application via a link sent to her. It was nothing more than remote desktop software that was supposed to streamline the entire process. The unsuspecting woman made a transfer for a reasonable sum of 850 zlotys. But it was not about the sum, that is how the fraudsters gained access to her account. The criminals called the woman several more times to assure her that her invested money was already earning money. Ultimately, it turned out that the fraudsters transferred 138 thousand zlotys from her account. The case was reported to the police.

The 43-year-old lost 200 thousand zlotys

A 43-year-old man from Bydgoszcz also suffered financial losses. He received a phone call from a supposed bank employee who explained that his money held in his account was at risk. The man did not believe him, but the fraudster was prepared for that. He said he would call him immediately from an authorized bank number. And so it happened. The man’s smartphone received a call from a landline number displayed as his bank’s hotline.. This made the man certain that he was talking to a real bank employee. A very long conversation ended with the money being transferred to an additional bank account. In this way, the mthe man lost 200 thousand zlotys.

A call for caution

The Bydgoszcz police appeal once again for vigilance and caution. They ask that for your own good, do not provide any login details in banking, do not open any links, do not install applications. In case of any suspicion, the matter should be reported to the police.
