The base was not secured in any way. It was completely open and not password protected, so anyone who found it had access to it. Fowler assures that the data came from all over the world, making the leak one of the largest in history. Logins and passwords to government websites are particularly worrying, potentially opening up the possibility of hacks into public administration.

Fowler reported the existence of the database to the hosting provider. However, he maintained that it belonged to a subsidiary and downplayed the matter. This delayed reactions for months, during which the database continued to grow by new records. Hosting was ultimately discontinued, but the lack of security and the long period in which the information was available raise legitimate security questions.

Fowler did not determine who owned the database or how long it had been available before it was discovered. Given its size, one would assume it contained data from multiple previous leaks. Therefore, some of the information was not new. This does not change the fact that it was a huge threat. That’s why the expert suggests changing your passwords and enabling 2-step verification wherever possible.
