YouTube introduces a new feature to fight disinformation
YouTube is testing a new feature that will allow viewers and creators to add contextual notes to published content. YouTube notes are ultimately intended to help combat disinformation. Feature available in testing phase, only in the USA.
YouTube has started testing a new feature context noteswhich will allow users report false content: outdated information, accidental mistake or intentional misinformation, by adding information to a video published on the website.
For now, the notes feature is being tested and will be made available limited number of YouTube app users in the United States. YouTube will invite selected creators to the notes preparation program and then forward them to external reviewers who will assess their usefulness.
Once you have accepted and found the note helpful, YouTube will begin sharing and serving to viewers in the app. Viewers will be able to judge whether the note added to the video is: useful, somewhat useful or not useful. Thanks to this data, YouTube will train bridging algorithms that allow for the effective display of really useful notes.
Below is an example of what a context note should look like in the YouTube application:
The purpose of the new YouTube feature
The Notes feature will eventually allow users to point out to others that content in a video is false, as well as add information to the video. For example, the note may inform that the video is a parody or correct the error by explaining that the material shows events other than those declared in the title, content or description of the video.
