Young and Furious: Controversial Ban This Year
The Australian government is planning to introduce a minimum age limit for using social media. The aim of the project is, of course, to protect the youngest from addiction and take care of their mental health.
Young people: what is this idea?
Of course, those involved don’t like the idea. Some experts are also opposed, claiming that introducing such bans will lead to the creation of an illegal underground.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is undeterred by the criticism and plans to introduce the first age limit tests later this year. He hasn’t said anything about the minimum age to use social media yet. Experts suggest it could be something between 14 and even 16 years old.
I would like children to stop spending time on their phones and start going outside to play football or swim in pools. I would like them to have real contact with other people and gather their life experiences. We all know that living only in social media is harmful to society.
– explains Prime Minister Albanese.
The EU failed at this
The European Union has already tried to introduce similar legal restrictions. However, due to complaints about limiting the rights of young children, EU authorities withdrew from this idea.
Social media platforms themselves also introduce their own age restrictions. This is the case on YouTube and TikTok, for example. Both platforms limit the age of users to at least 13.
