what will it be used for?

Nvidia deployed new drivers a few days ago, the main interest of which is to mark the debut of RTX IO technology on compatible machines… three years after its announcement. The latter will initially be usable on “Portal: Prelude RTX” and “Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart”.

Faster loading of your games, exploration without slowdowns or jerks in ever larger open worlds, textures displayed even faster… these were some of the promises of RTX IO technology, announced by Nvidia in 2020. Three years later, the chameleon giant finally decides to let us enjoy it on PC. Through the latest Game Ready drivers (version 536.62), the firm announces the kick-off of this technology on the first two games: the mod free Portal: Prelude RTX And Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

As a reminder, RTX IO technology allows developers to quickly transfer data from the SSD to the video memory of your graphics card, without going through the processor or RAM. This is done by taking advantage of both the DirectStorage API, developed by Microsoft, and on-the-fly data decompression enabled by RTX graphics cards. It is through this that Nvidia wants to reach the milestone of 14 GB / s, the maximum bandwidth of the PCIe 4.0 standard, and thus significantly boost in-game loading.

Driver Game Ready, what’s new besides the RTX IO?

DirectStorage for Windows will allow games to leverage Nvidia’s RTX IO technology and provide game developers with a very efficient and industry-standard way to get the best possible GPU and input/output (I/O) system performance,” said Bryan Langley, one of Microsoft’s Windows Graphics and Gaming Branch Managers. “With DirectStorage, games are reduced in size, load times decrease, and virtual worlds are free to grow larger and more detailed, with smooth, seamless streaming. »

For the rest, the Game Ready 536.62 drivers bring with them the support and optimizations necessary to launch Portal: Prelude RTX, Remnant II And Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart in the best conditions. The new Nvidia drivers are also optimized for the future RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB. Expected a little later in July, this new version of the RTX 4060 should in particular make it possible to launch certain games in “Ultra”… instead of the “High” settings to which the RTX 4060 8 GB must be limited in certain cases.
