Western Digital ends SSD? The manufacturer is introducing big changes

Western Digital semiconductor media may soon disappear from store shelves. All SSDs have been moved to the SanDisk brand website.

Market HDD has shrunk significantly in recent years, and manufacturers in the consumer segment can be counted on the fingers of one hand – Seagate, Toshiba and Western Digital. However, even they noticed that consumers were increasingly willing to choose semiconductor media and started producing them.

Internal restructuring or announcement of separation?

One of the most important changes was the purchase of the company by WD in 2016 SanDiskwhich allowed us to obtain a number of useful patents and solutions, including proprietary controllers and software. The Americans did not expire the brand, but instead offered SSD within both. However, this may change soon.

It was noticed that Western Digital has moved all of its solid-state media to SanDisk’s website. All that remains on the main site are NAS devices, RAID stations, and hard drives for the consumer, gaming, and data center segments.

Business partners and wholesale customers were also informed by e-mail that two separate support departments are now offered – Western Digital Support for HDDs and devices that support them, and SanDisk Support for SSDs and other flash-based products.

The Americans did not publish any new press release. However, it seems that this is the result of a decision made at the end of last year, when it was rumored that one of the larger investors – Elliott Management – was pushing to divide the company into two independent entities.
