we finally know the fateful date for the MG4, Tesla Model 3 and Dacia Spring

The government is refining its ecological bonus system for 2024 on electric cars and explains that it will be necessary to wait until mid-December to know the list of vehicles that will be eligible. If you are interested in the idea of buying an electric car produced in China (MG4, Tesla Model 3, etc.), some advice: don’t wait.

We might as well tell you right away, if you’re eyeing an MG4 or a Tesla Model Y, it’s better to decide quickly to check out. Because with the new ecological bonus system for 2024, there is a chance that you will no longer be entitled to the government boost. Unless some manufacturers find a solution.

While we are waiting precisely for the calculation method that will be put in place to be able to benefit – or not – from the future bonus, the government continues to drop information here and there on the sauce with which consumers will be eaten from the Next January 1st. And after the announcements by the Minister of Energy Transition, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, at the start of the month, it is the turn of the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire to share his new information: the list of electric cars who will be eligible for the 2024 bonus will be known on December 15.

60 points minimum

As a reminder, the 2024 bonus for the purchase of an electric car will no longer be based solely on the price of the car (less than 47,000 euros) nor on its weight (less than 2.4 tonnes). A whole set of environmental criteria will now be taken into account, making it possible to give an environmental score to each car. A way to look at the entire life cycle of the car and to have a more global vision of the polluting emissions induced by the car from its manufacture until its arrival on the road.

Materials, production, factory power supply, battery type, transport… These are all criteria which should be taken into account in the very complex calculation which will lead to the score which will be awarded to each model. And we already know that you will have to achieve a minimum score of 60 points out of 80 to be eligible for the new bonus.

Curbing the importation of cars produced in China

While waiting for Ademe (Ecological Transition Agency) to sift through each model of electric car that is or will be sold here, we will know from this Tuesday, September 19, 2023, the decree and the order which govern the environmental criteria chosen since They will be published in the Official Journal.

MG4

Obviously, this new method has its advantages and disadvantages. Particularly complex, it nevertheless makes it possible to favor vehicles with a lower carbon footprint.

And if such a calculation method is a first in Europe, it joins the current trend which is trying to slow down Chinese imports. Even if it is obviously more subtle here (calculation of emissions from factories, still often coal-fired in China, or those linked to transport to our home), while Ursula van der Leyen, President of the European Commission , she has just announced the opening of an investigation into the subsidies from which Chinese cars benefit at home and which artificially lower prices here. Which could lead to higher customs fees.

As for the amount of the bonus, there too it is still a mystery, even if Agnès Pannier-Runacher had spoken of a “strengthening” of the bonus, which could be interpreted as an increase. Continued to the next episode.
