WD accelerated HDD. Tough guys will make sense again

HDD is currently only material for data storage. And even less frequently used, because SSDs are slowly replacing HDDs. Or at least they pushed out when SSD prices were at a noticeably lower level. This is where the new family of hard drives from WD comes into play, offering bandwidth and read/write speeds high enough to even support applications.

More heads and High-Bandwidth

The solution is brilliant in its simplicity: the company installed more than one head capable of reading data in its new HDDs. Simply adding a second head doubles the writing and reading speed, and you can add more.

However, this is not the only solution. The next step is to add a second, independent actuator, which also doubles the parameters. There is nothing stopping us from finally combining both of these technologies. Ultimately, we are talking about HDD acceleration by as much as eight times. This would mean that HDD could compete with SSD under SATA, and installing a system or application on it would make sense even from the perspective of today’s computers.

Moreover, WD also presented another type of HDD. This time, it aims to reduce energy consumption by as much as 20%. These are to be dedicated to AI data centers. It is worth remembering that all the solutions discussed above are dedicated to data centers or corporate clients. And although individual technologies are already finished, it is not known when or even if they will reach individual customers. Let’s remember that if SSD prices normalize, it won’t make much sense.
