Are you still using an older version of Windows and are you a gamer? We don’t have good news for you. Steam has dropped support for your operating system. There will be no need for updates.
Steam not for older Windows
Support for Windows 7 and 8 officially ended in January 2024, but Steam users could still install newer versions of the launcher. This has changed with its latest version, which is no longer available on older Microsoft operating systems. Moreover, previous versions will not be updated automatically.
Such a decision cannot be surprising. Microsoft itself no longer supports Windows 7 and 8. Other companies creating various types of software are also breaking with older windows. For gamers, the only choice is currently to update their computer to Windows 10, or preferably Windows 11, which will be supported for the longest time. Linux is also an alternative.
Fortunately, the problem only affects a handful of users. According to Steam statistics, only 0.28% of people use Windows 7. platform users. Windows 8 isn’t even on the list.
At the same time, Steam no longer supports macOS versions 10.13 and 10.14.
