TVP will not show EURO 2024 in 4K. Why?

The largest sporting events in the world have already accustomed us to the fact that matches are often broadcast in 4K resolution. This was the case, among others, during the FIFA World Cup, which took place 2 years ago. However, it will be different in the case of the upcoming EURO 2024. The competition on TVP will not be shown in 4K quality. Why?

EURO 2024 on TVP without 4K

Unfortunately, viewers will not have the opportunity to watch EURO 2024 matches in 4K quality. Many fans may wonder why this decision was made. It turns out that she was not on the side of Telewizja Polska. UEFA is to blame for everything.

The producer of the signal for all matches is the tournament organizer, i.e. UEFA. We receive broadcasts of matches via optical fiber at the International Broadcasting Center, which is located in Leipzig. We also receive the signal via satellite. We will not broadcast the signal in 4K because UEFA does not produce the signal in the so-called native 4K. You can extend this signal artificially, but we decided not to do it due to generating unnecessary costs.

UEFA, as you could read about in our yesterday's text “Technological secrets of EURO 2024”, decided deliver matches to broadcasters in single-layer 1080p50 HDR (hybrid log-gamma, HLG) format. Therefore, Telewizja Polska does not have much room for maneuver here.

New possibilities for sound reception

However, TVP prepared another interesting fact. All matches will also be shown via digital terrestrial television DVB-T2. These will be broadcast with sound in the latest Dolby AC-4 5.1 technology, which will provide viewers with several different tracks to choose from, as well as the ability to adjust the volume of commentators and sounds from the stadium.

Viewers will be able to choose stadium sound on their TVs, which creates the impression of being present at the stadium – without the sound of the commentator, TVP commentary or the original commentary in English. Euro 2024 in English. Additionally, it will be possible to adjust the commentator's sound level relative to the sound from the stadium.
