There’s plenty available in stores SSD from many different companies. And although we can choose in terms of prices, performance, capacity or warranty, we will often find exactly the same components inside. There are only a few manufacturers of controllers and memory chips on the market.

Greater capacity and 12% higher efficiency

The most important suppliers of NAND chips include the American one Micron and South Korean Samsung and SK hynix. And it so happens that the last one mentioned was ahead of the competition and boasted about it to the world.

In the official press release we can read that SK hynix was the first in the world to start mass production of 321-layer 4D TLC NAND memories with a capacity of 1 Tb. They are meant to offer 12% higher transfers than the previous generation, increasing energy efficiency by over 10%.

The yield is reportedly very high, and deliveries to partners are expected at first half of 2025. To begin with, the new bones will go to media designed for data centers specializing in working with artificial intelligence. Over time, however, they will also debut in the consumer segment.

It is worth recalling that This is not the first success of the Koreans. It was SK hynix that introduced the largest capacity 238-layer NAND to the market in June last year. Now there is nothing else to do but wait for Samsung and Micron’s response. Especially the latter, which supplies a large number of SSD manufacturers.
