This Car Maker Wants to Watch You, and in return, there’s a revolutionary option
Can car lighting still undergo a revolutionary change? It turns out that yes, because our lamps can become more… smart. Ford is working on this solution. Will it blaze a new trail or repeat the history of Opel?
Being smart may not be as popular as it once was. But it is still a popular and important topic, also in the sphere of city functioning. But can our car lighting also become “smart”? This may be indicated by a patent application recently published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). It was filed by Ford, which wants the lights in cars were even more dependent on us. What is it actually about?
Will they reach where your eyes can see?
Up to now, we have already seen various solutions related to lighting in cars. The topic of illuminating the side in which we are turning is rather nothing extraordinary. Following this path, we will also encounter lamps that can physically rotate together with the direction in which we are driving the car. However, this function is related to steering. Ford decided to approach the topic slightly differently.
The company suggests that the lighting control could be useful not only during turns but also on straight sections. To enable this the manufacturer focused on tracking our eyesight and head movements and based on this, decide on a possible change of the lighting direction. Imagine a night trip through the forest, where you notice a shadow out of the corner of your eye, but the lights are focused only on what’s in front of your car. The solution prepared by Ford could change this situation, which could help to make sure that the silhouette we see really belongs to an animal approaching the road.
Interestingly, as the Motor Authority website, the idea is not new. Opel was already working on a similar solution almost 10 years ago. Unfortunately, apart from announcements of a great revolution, I did not see to date no specifics on this subject. Ford now has an extra incentive, however, because federal regulations have just changed in the US to allow the use of modern matrix headlights. They have been available in Europe for years.
