Two researchers from Canada and the US conducted an experiment. They decided to check how two weeks of social media detox would affect the health and mental state of an adult. Not all conclusions were as expected.
Detox will tell you the truth
The research on the impact of social media on our health was conducted by Paige Coyne from Henry Ford Care and Sarah Woodruff from the University of Windsor. It was conducted on a group of 31 people, aged 18 to 30. All participants were average users of social media platforms, meaning they used them for at least an hour a day. All had phones that recorded screen time. As part of the experiment, They were asked to limit their screen time to 30 minutes for two weeks. During this time, study participants had to complete three surveys.
The conclusions were surprising in one aspect.
It turned out that all the people tested showed an improvement in their health. And that was very good news. Above all, the quality of sleep improved, and as for the level of stress, it went down significantly. The pressure of having to participate in social media life also decreased. Disappointingly, however, there was no impact on physical activity. There were also reports that some people felt the lack of contact with friends and family quite strongly.
It also turned out that it wasn’t easy for the study participants to escape their phone use. When they couldn’t have social media discussions on their phones, they played games or used other devices.
