They let the genie out of the bottle. A new AI tool has rocked the gaming world
Google has just released a new game creation tool. Shortly after its publication, the entire market experienced a major crash, and the share prices of the main players skyrocketed. Is there anything to fear?
What can Project Genie actually do and why it caused panic
Project Genie, this a new tool for generative artificial intelligence to create games based on prompts. It uses the Genie 3 and Gemini models and then generates prototypes of the games that are fully interactive. The tool has one serious limitation – it allows you to check the created world, but with a time limit 60 seconds. Even though it does not create fully functional prototypes, it still worried investors, and many of them began to sell their shares in large game production companies en masse.
The biggest players were hit, including Take-Two Interactive (owner of Rockstar Games, creators of GTA), CD Projekt Red, and even Nintendo and Roblox. The company lost the most Unity (as much as 20% decrease)which finally delivers its engine to game developers.
However, before this panic becomes more widespread, it is worth realizing what Project Genie really is – it is not an engine for creating games in the strict sense. It is a tool for rapid prototyping of titles that can quite cleverly clone and mix various ideas, and then allow immediate check.
However, it does not provide any integrated graphics rendering, sound creation, physics shaping or control remodeling system that can be found in ready-made commercial packages such as Unity or Unreal Engine. Thus there are no lasting relationships between objects herewe are not bound by mission goals, the logic of the world is rudimentary, etc. AI by generating and filling in various parts of the world, an artificial intelligence tool can forgetting what you wanted to achieve just a moment earlier. That’s why Google indicates that it is experimental tool. And you also have to take into account that the final product is limited to 720p and 24 fpswith significant control delays.
So the use of Project Genie at this point seems to be to help us determine whether a brainstormed idea is actually a good idea. worth investing your time in it.
The model was based on approx. 200 thousand hours of materials dedicated to video games from public sources. The creators maintain that he was not “fed” with any titles directly.
The technology has potential, and of course you could say that Google has let the genie out of the bottle, but that’s pretty much it for now a tiny defenseless soul. There is no way in this form that this will be a new direction in game development, but rather a curiosity that will not be seriously incorporated into gamedev until it is refined.
