There has never been a film like this before. At times, it’s hard to believe what we see
Can artificial intelligence rejuvenate popular actors? Tom Hanks and Robin Wright experienced this personally in their latest film “Here”. It is one of the first feature-length productions of this type that was created based on AI-assisted effects.
TriStar Pictures has released the new film “Here”, directed by Robert Zemeckis. It cost $50 million and it used real-time generative facial transformation techniques to portray actors such as Tom Hanks and Robin Wright over the course of 60 years. It is one of the first feature-length productions of this type that was created based on AI-assisted effects.
The film is an adaptation of a 2014 graphic novel set in New Jersey in different time periods. Instead of casting actors of different ages, the production used artificial intelligence to modify the appearance of Tom Hanks and Robin Wright.
The rejuvenation technology comes from Metaphysica visual effects company. While filming the scenes, the crew had two screens to view: one showing the actual appearance of the actors, and the other showing them at the age required for the scene.
Three years ago, it would have been impossible to make a film like this.
– director Zemeckis told the New York Times.
The effects for the level of facial modification achieved in this film would require hundreds of artists and a much larger budget. Metaphysic technology was also used in two other productions from 2024: Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Alien: Romulus.
