In January 2025, the data of thousands of Poles will be transferred to the National Tax Administration. We are talking about people who sold products or services via online sales platforms.
These include Allegro, OLX, Vinted, but also Booking and Airbnb. This may be particularly painful for people renting apartments, premises and houses through the last two websites, because many of them have been paying taxes incorrectly for years.
The tax office misses PLN 1 billion
Business Insider found a report showing that Poles spent as much as PLN 87,000 on Booking and Airbnb. active rental offers of apartments, houses and rooms. These are data as of May 2024. The thing is that most of them pay taxes incorrectly. They often pay a lump sum of 8.5% to the tax office, when they should have established a business and pay much higher taxes.
According to Grzegorz Żurawski, president of the Polish Short-Term Rental Association, the tax office loses up to PLN 1 billion annually in this way. The problem is that after the introduction of the EU DAC7 directive, the National Tax Administration will receive information about almost all landlords. This may mean mass inspections and the need to pay overdue taxes, even 5 years ago.
The collection of such money from taxpayers was made easier by the DAC7 directive, thanks to which portals such as Booking or Airbnb report to the Polish tax authorities every transaction made since January 2023. If we take into account that the tax office can pursue the investigation up to five years back, we have PLN 5 billion.
– says Grzegorz Żurawski in an interview with Business Insider.
It is worth recalling that the EU DAC7 directive requires online sales platforms to report to the National Tax Administration anyone who makes more than 30 sales transactions in a given year or when their total amount exceeds PLN 2,000. euro. In January next year, the tax office will receive information for both 2024 and 2023.
