The Peugeot e-208 will move and could turn its back on France

The Peugeot e-208 will leave its current factory located in Slovakia. It now seems to be done. Will it soon become a car made in France, as the government wishes? Nothing is less sure…

Assembled in the Slovak plant in Trnava, the Peugeot e-208 represents volumes non negligablewith nearly 50,000 copies registered last year in Europe. Also, the French government would have liked Stellantis to repatriate its production to France. The echoes had revealed that discussions had been under way for some time to trying to convince Carlos Tavares. They related in particular to possible subsidies, which would have been granted to the automotive group in the event of relocation on national soil.

The Peugeot e-208 still in exile

Only then, it would seem that the efforts of the state have not borne fruit. Stellantis should transfer the production of the e-208 well, but in theSpanish plant in Figueruelaslocated near Zaragoza. In any case, this is what the Spanish media have recently reported. For the thermal versions, the situation should also change: they too would leave Slovakia for the Moroccan factory in Kenitra, which already provides part of the production.

In Figueruelas, the Peugeot e-208 would notably find the Opel Corsa-e, which shares the same platform. It is also in this factory that the Stellantis group will produce the new Lancia Ypsilon. Expected next year, it will also be offered in a fully electric version.

The transfer of the production of the e-208 was decided in order to free up space for other models in the Trnava plant. It should be done during the car restylingwhich will probably take place this summer, after the recent restyling of the Peugeot e-2008.

The production of the Peugeot e-208 in Spain should be cleaner than in Slovakia, but not as clean as if it were carried out in France, with the low-carbon energy of the country.

Still electric Peugeots made in France

If the rumors are true, Stellantis’ position regarding the e-208 contrasts with that of Renault, which has chosen to produce the new electric R5 at the factory in Douai, France. However, Carlos Tavares’ group don’t leave France. For example, it has undertaken to produce the future e-3008 and e-5008 at Sochaux. Given the expected success of this duo, this is real good news for the domestic industry.

The Mulhouse plant will recover the e-408, e-308 and e-308 SW. These models nevertheless seem promised to a more confidential distribution. This is particularly true for the e-308 / e-308 SW binomial. With its particularly high prices, it leaves with a serious handicap.
